Family of boy killed after lightning strike settles lawsuit against club

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The family of an 11-year old boy killed after lightning struck near his rowing boat on Lake Fairview last September settled their lawsuit against the club he was a member of and the U.S. Rowing Association, documents showed.

Langston Rodriguez-Sane fell overboard after the strike, but made it to shore with three of his teammates. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

The lawsuit claimed it was the boy’s first time on the water in a novice boat with virtually no training or any coaches around. It also claimed the North Orlando Rowing Club staff failed to send the kids indoors on a day when bad weather was predicted.

The lawsuit went on to say an on-site AED was not working and said there was no warning system on the lake to help rowers get to safety faster.

“Had they complied with the most basic standard of care, putting safety first, these boys would still be alive today,” the family’s attorney, Andrew Yaffa, said at the time of the filing. “It’s my hope and prayer that these children are being supervised and trained much better than Langston was.”

Yaffa and his partners were not immediately available for comment, though another attorney on the case indicated the terms of the settlement were confidential.

A portion of the lawsuit against the College Park Lions Club, which owns the boat house the rowing club practiced out of, is still ongoing.

A second lawsuit filed by the family of the second boy who died, 13-year-old Gavin Christman, is also still ongoing. Christman’s body was recovered the day after he went missing.

North Orlando Rowing has since renamed itself to Orlando City Boat Club. An emailed request for comment about the settlement was not immediately returned.
