FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. — Flagler County is in an excessive heat advisory.

The heat index is set to reach 110 degrees today.

Dozens of people were cooling off at the beach.

Emergency management director Jonathan Lord said if you’re not in the air conditioning, cooling off in the Atlantic is the next best thing, where the water is in the 80s and a lot cooler than on land.

Lord said if you don’t have to be outside, he recommends staying indoors.

If you have to work outside, drink plenty of cold water and stay out of the sun.

People should watch out for heat stroke, or what’s even more common, heat exhaustion.

“People start getting dizzy and their blood pressure drops, they’ll start feeling faint,” Lord said. “We want people to get their people out of the heat into the cool. Heat stroke is where you can potentially head towards unconsciousness, and sometimes heat stroke can unfortunately end up in death.”

Lord said Flagler County has not received any heat calls on Friday. The heat advisory lasts until 9 p.m.

Lord said it’s important to check on your family and friends, especially the elderly and children and stay hydrated.
