Elementary school secretary charged with DUI after fatal crash along I-4

POLK COUNTY, Fla. — A Polk County elementary school secretary is facing felony charges in connection with a fatal crash along Interstate 4 Wednesday evening.

Deputies say 46-year-old Lucretia Bruno of Lakeland was driving west on I-4 near the 10th St. overpass when she hit two other cars that had stopped for an earlier crash.

According to investigators, the drivers of a pickup truck and a Mustang had just finished exchanging information when a Ford Fusion driven by Bruno drifted onto the shoulder, hitting both vehicles.

The driver of the pickup, who had been standing outside the driver’s door, was hit by Bruno’s car and thrown onto the car’s windshield.

Deputies say Bruno then crashed into the Mustang, throwing the pickup truck’s driver from the hood of her car into the rear bumper of the Mustang.

The driver of the pick-up truck died at the scene.

Two people inside the Mustang were not injured.

According to deputies, Bruno — a secretary at Edgar L. Padgett Elementary School in Lakeland — said that she had just left a bar where she drank five or six beers and was on her way home when the crash happened.

Bruno was booked into the Polk County Jail on charges of DUI manslaughter and two counts of DUI with property damage.

She is being held on no bond.

Deputies have not released the name of the driver who was killed.
