Disney World does not plan to fight changes to Reedy Creek, president says

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Walt Disney World said it does not plan to fight the changes being made to Reedy Creek Improvement District and will let Gov. Ron DeSantis take control of its Board of Supervisors.

Walt Disney World Resort President Jeff Vahle said in a statement:

For more than 50 years, the Reedy Creek Improvement District has operated at the highest standards, and we appreciate all that the District has done to help our destination grow and become one of the largest economic contributors and employers in the state. We are focused on the future and are ready to work within this new framework, and we will continue to innovate, inspire and bring joy to the millions of guests who come to Florida to visit Walt Disney World each year.”

It’s unknown if the company has a deal worked out with the governor that still gives them a seat at the table.

Florida Republicans are celebrating a new era, that gives DeSantis the power to appoint people to Reedy Creek’s Board of Supervisors.

The bill’s other powers strip or modify some parts of the district Disney never opted to use, like acquiring neighboring properties through eminent domain, or building a nuclear power plant.

However, Democrats opposed the effort, saying the party that normally supports small government voter in favor of a government takeover.
