Disney joins Universal, other hotels in long legal battle against county official over taxes

ORLANDO, Fla. — Editor’s note: This story is available as a result of a content partnership between WFTV and the Orlando Business Journal.

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts U.S. Inc. on Dec. 13 filed 13 lawsuits against Orange County Property Appraiser Amy Mercado, alleging she has significantly inflated the value of its properties for the 2024 tax year.

The lawsuits mirror similar ongoing legal action by several other local properties, including Universal Orlando Resort hotels, against Mercado in unconnected cases.

Mercado is the prime target of the lawsuits, though Orange County Tax Collector Scott Randolph and Executive Director Jim Zingale of the Florida Department of Revenue also are named as defendants.

 Each filing covered various Disney properties, including the company’s theme parks, resorts, administrative areas and more.
