Man fatally shot by deputy in Cocoa identified

COCOA, Fla. — A man was killed after he opened fire on a deputy, according to the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

The shooting happened late Monday night near Aurora Avenue and Thor Avenue in Cocoa.

Deputies identified the man as Cedrick Lamont Bishop, 30, of Cocoa.

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey told WFTV his deputies were called to the neighborhood for reports of shots being fired. He said the man was shooting into homes and cars before turning the gun on a deputy.

"From everything we know at this point, he fired on our deputy sheriff. Our deputy sheriff was able to get out of the vehicle and take cover. The individual continued to target our deputy and our deputy returned fire, killing the individual," said Ivey.

Investigators said the Deputy Nick Worthy was the first to arrive on the scene.

According to investigators, when Bishop saw Worthy he began moving toward the patrol vehicle and fired his gun, hitting the it.

Investigators said Worthy climbed from his vehicle and shot Bishop when he was confronted near the patrol vehicle.

Bishop was taken to a hospital, where he died.

No other injuries were reported.
