Deputies: Polk County woman accused of trying to suffocate disabled husband

POLK COUNTY, Fla. — A Polk County college professor was arrested on attempted murder charges after deputies said she tried to suffocate her disabled husband.

Cherry Olds, 59, of Lakeland, turned herself in to authorities on Sunday.

Deputies received a call Thursday from Cherry Olds’ adult son, who reported that his mother tried to kill her paraplegic husband, James Olds.

James Olds, 57, suffers from multiple sclerosis and is bed-ridden.

He told deputies that Cherry Olds held a pillow over his face and attempted to suffocate him last week.

He said he told her, “You almost killed me,” to which she replied, “That’s the point, (expletive),” and then put the pillow on his face a second time.

The couple's son heard the commotion and walked into the room, reports said. He believes that he interrupted his mother from further injuring his father.

Deputies obtained a warrant for Cherry Olds’ arrest, but she turned herself in on Sunday.

She is being held in jail on no bond.

Cherry Olds is a professor at Polk State College.
