Chitwood: Deputies shoot, kill suspect after 4 hour standoff in Ormond Beach

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — The Volusia County Sheriff’s shot and killed a man accused of shooting into home and at deputies in Ormond Beach on Thursday following a four hour standoff, Sheriff Mike Chitwood said.

1 p.m. Update:

During a press conference, Chitwood said deputies responded to a assist in a mental health crisis call.

When deputies arrived, they said Joseph Difusco refused to be seen by medical professionals and began shooting at residents.

After trying to negotiate with Difusco, deputies gained access to his apartment, and shot and killed him.

Chitwood said that suspect fired close to 200 rounds at residents and deputies.

No other injuries were reported.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is currently responding to an incident in Ormond Beach where a man is shooting multiple rounds outside his condo and at neighboring units.

On Thursday morning, deputies responded to the Kingston Shores condos on the 5500 block of Ocean Shore Boulevard.

Deputies said the man has also fired at a VSO vehicle from inside his condo.

Neighbors have been notified and evacuated and traffic is being rerouted, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies are asking residents to avoid the area as the work to resolve this incident.
