VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A Deltona man has been arrested in connection with a road rage shooting that left a garbage truck driver injured in DeLand last month, according to police.
The shooting happened on Aug. 13 on Greenborough Loop in a newly developed residential subdivision that was under construction at the time.
Officers arrived to find a man suffering from a gunshot wound to his left thigh. The victim, who was driving a garbage truck on his regular route, was treated at the scene by Volusia County EMS before being airlifted to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, where he underwent emergency surgery.
According to investigators, the incident began when a white box truck was blocking the roadway, leading to a dispute between the garbage truck driver and the truck’s occupants. Police said the confrontation escalated and resulted in an exchange of gunfire.
Detectives reviewed surveillance video from both vehicles and forwarded the case to the State Attorney’s Office for charging review.
On Sept. 17, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office served an arrest warrant for Johnathan Javon Figueroa, 35, at his home on Saxon Boulevard in Deltona.
Figueroa faces the following charges:
- Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon Without Intent to Kill
- Improper Exhibition of a Dangerous Weapon
- Discharging a Firearm in Public
He was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail and was assigned a $12,000 bond.
“Our officers responded quickly and worked thoroughly to investigate the incident,” said DeLand Police Capt. Dice. “We are committed to working with our State Attorney to charge offenders for violent criminal acts against others and that endanger the public at large.”
