DELAND, Fla. — People traveling through DeLand will soon have an alternative way to donate to the homeless in the community.

Instead of giving money to panhandlers, the city is encouraging people to scan QR codes posted at area businesses to donate to the Neighborhood Center of West Volusia as part of the “Spare Change for Real Change” campaign.

“People give to panhandlers with good intention; however, there are better and safer ways to ensure that our donations are put to good use,” Mayor Chris Cloudman said.

Pending approval of the Florida Department of Transportation, the city said the same signs will be placed at intersections where panhandling is prohibited due to safety concerns.
