DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Residents in a Volusia County neighborhood are dealing with aftermath of flooding from a rainy week.
They said the flooding has forced raw sewage into their driveways and homes.
They’re afraid the problem will make them sick.
Tina Nelson and her neighbors on Ruthbern Road in Daytona Beach said it will be a long time before they get back to their normal lives.
“This is raw sewage. Chunks of poo and toilet paper floating all the way into my garage,” Nelson said.
She said the sewage has backed up into her house and she’s concerned for her health.
“I have a compromised immune system and I’m so afraid of getting sick from this. I’m terrified,” Nelson said.
Her neighbors said they have sewage backing into their homes as well.
“The whole house. The whole outside of the house and it’s going to happen again,” said Randy Epps.
Epps said his mother renovated her home after a flood several years ago. Her interior is now ruined again, and, like her neighbors, they’re afraid more rain will bring more flooding.
Residents said the same thing happened after bouts of heavy rain five years ago.
Nelson said she last saw a Public Works employee in her neighborhood on Wednesday and was told there was nothing that could be done about the sewage.
“They just looked at me and said, ‘Sorry there’s nothing that we can do,’” Nelson said.
Nelson said city workers told her the sewage system was never fixed since the last flood.
Daytona Beach still has millions of dollars in storm water management projects to complete, but residents dealing with the sewage problem want their neighborhood to become first priority.
