Commissioner says some Orange County residents still having garbage-collection issues

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A year since Orange County instituted a new trash service, a commissioner said some residents are still having problems with garbage collection.

Commissioner Betsy VanderLey said her office is still receiving emailed complaints from residents about issues with the automated curbside trash pickup.

Last year, Channel 9 reported about residents who weren't having their trash picked up on time after the county hired three new private trash hauling companies.

The companies cover five different zones, each of which initially had problems when the program was launched.

Jim Becker, manager of the county's Solid Waste Division, said he expected there to be some issues during the first few weeks while trash haulers worked out kinks in the system.

Becker has told Channel 9 in the past that complaints have continued to decline.

But county leaders said they want to know what’s being done to address any problems that do remain.

VanderLey had planned to address any remaining issues during a commission meeting Tuesday morning, but she had to cancel for personal reasons, a spokeswoman said.

The Solid Waste Division staff will present an update on the program during a commission meeting scheduled for March 7.
