COCOA, Fla. — The city of Cocoa, a local nonprofit and a South Florida developer are working together to bring more affordable housing to the area.

The goal of the $29 million Orchid Lake Development is to provide support services and high-quality safe housing.

The developer already has a 7.5-acre site in mind, right off Michigan Avenue in Cocoa. The developer plans to close on the property in the next few weeks.

Brevard County’s nonprofit Housing for Homeless already oversees 95 properties, but the proposed Orchid Lake Development will help fill a critical need so much so that Cocoa City Council voted to utilize  a state statute that will allow the apartments to be built on a property currently zoned for commercial use.

Housing for Homeless has a fundraising gala scheduled for Oct. 1 with the hopes of raising money to assist more people hoping to move into Orchid Lake.
