ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — It’s one of the most popular apps our kids use, but it’s also one of the most controversial.

Across the country, school districts have blocked ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence that can write your papers for you. It’s basically a human, an AI technology that will write about anything you want.

Cory Cordero just graduated high school and ChatGPT helped him all along.

“It made classes so much easier,” he said. “And especially since students are super busy, I was doing a million things in high school, I would use it all the time.”

Channel 9 asked Cordero to ask ChatGPT about his favorite subject: Taylor Swift’s album “Reputation” and why it’s important.

In a matter of seconds, it told us what we needed to know.

“If I had a class on Taylor Swift’s album Reputation and I sent this, I would get flying colors,” Cordero said.

But that cut and paste is where the controversy comes in. Many school districts and universities have banned it for that reason.

Orange County Public Schools doesn’t allow it to be used in their schools, but Temple University Professor Subodha Kumar thinks that’s the wrong way to look at these apps,

“The argument is about critical thinking and some argue about cheating,” Kumar said. “In my opinion, rather than banning, we should think of constructive ways for it to be utilized and to find ways it can improve education goals rather than completely banning.”
