LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — School safety is top of mind for parents as their kids get ready to head back to class in about two weeks.

Officials with one local district said safety has been the focus all summer.

Lake County schools said its deputies have trained all summer.

Lake County parents met with school resource deputies Thursday night to go over their concerns.
Deputies said they have been holding active shooter drills on campus, and updating the schools to make them more secure.

“We are in the process of changing door locks,” said Lake County Schools’ supervisor of safety and security, Joseph Mabry. “So you cannot unlock the door. It requires a key, but upon closing the door it automatically locks.”
The Lake County school district has 34 school resource officers, and two deputies are assigned to larger campuses.

They said if the worst were to happen, they’re ready.
