ORLANDO, Fla. — An event called “Drag & Donuts” has been canceled at an Orange County high school.

Orange County Public Schools said it canceled the drag event after getting a call from state education leaders who questioned whether it was age appropriate.
The performer involved in the program said he just wanted to spread a positive message.

“Drag & Donuts” is an annual event put on by members of the LGBTQ+ student body at Boone High School.
This year, Jason Deshazo, who goes by Momma Ashley Rose, was scheduled to speak.

Deshazo said he was planning to tell the students his story about coming out as a gay man and his life experiences.
The Orange County school district shared a message sent out to parents by the principal of Boone High School.

“After receiving a call from the Florida Department of Education today, we have cancelled the event. The department questioned whether the event was age and developmentally appropriate and indicated any administrator, teacher, or staff member in attendance may be investigated and jeopardize their professional license.”
