Central Florida braces for frigid weekend

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orange County is opening its doors tonight to people in need of a warm place to go.

At The Salvation Army on West Colonial Drive, an emergency men’s shelter opened Friday evening. Staff is ensuring men who need a place to stay warm have one and bending the rule that states when those in need have to be in the shelter by.

The shelter is not requiring IDs either.

The Goldenrod Recreation Center in Winter Park was also setting up a warming center Friday. It opened at 5 p.m. They said they have space for 150 people and those in need can come in at any time.

It plans to be open until Sunday at noon. The Salvation Army said it’s running on the same schedule.

Temperatures are supposed to get into the 30s overnight and into Saturday.

Lynx also said it is offering free bus rides to anyone needing shelter.

The Coalition for the Homeless on North Terry Avenue and the Orlando Union Rescue Mission on West Colonial also have resources available.
