BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Channel 9 obtained video showing an eight-minute confrontation on Friday between a Brevard County mother and her child's substitute bus driver.
Authorities said the driver wouldn't let 44-year-old Kelly Loughney take her child off the bus until she showed identification, at which point Loughney launched into a threatening tirade.
"I need your ID," the driver can be heard telling Loughney.
"I don't have an ID," she replied.
The driver then told the child to sit back in his seat.
"No, you are not taking my kid back with you," Loughney said.
The district said the driver followed policy when she didn't allow Loughney's son off the bus at a stop near West Gate Place.
Brevard Public Schools policy says kindergarten and pre-K students aren't allowed off the bus unless someone designated to take the child is there. Those individuals must provide identification on request.
According to sheriff's deputies, the substitute driver made the request before she was willing to let the Saturn Elementary-Middle School student off the bus.
"Let my son off this bus," Loughney demands.
"No, I can't," replied the driver.
Deputies said Loughney forced her way onto the bus, striking and pushing the driver. She has since been charged with battery on a school employee.
