BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Brevard County students and teachers, listen up: If you prefer an extra side of vacation with your holiday turkey, you’re in luck.
Brevard Public Schools will be closed the entire week of Thanksgiving.

District officials announced the move Wednesday to shutter all campuses for an extended holiday.

A BPS news release cited Superintendent Dr. Mark Mullins’ intent to “give staff and families more time with loved ones during what has been a challenging first few months of the school year.”
The surge of COVID-19 at the beginning of the school year and a nationwide worker shortage caused “extra work in the classroom” for BPS staff.
Board members gave initial approval on the agenda item during Wednesday’s Special School Board meeting.

That means the district will be closed from Nov. 22-25.
The district noted another reason for its decision to extend the Thanksgiving holiday -- no hurricane make-up days are necessary this academic year.

The district acknowledged that their calendar changes will undoubtedly affect the schedules of “tens of thousands” of parents and other caregivers.
BPS advised families through social media to stay tuned for information about childcare opportunities.
