Police: 5 people injured after 3 drive-by shootings in Melbourne

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Melbourne police said five people were shot on Sunday in Melbourne after three separate drive-by shootings.

Officers said each of the five people who were shot was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The bullets started flying just before 2 a.m. on Sunday. Officers said an unknown vehicle drove by a group of people gathered on Testimony Street and shot at the group. Police said one of the people in the group returned gunfire from his lawfully carried firearm.

Officers said they found several cars and homes in the area with bullet holes.

About 15 minutes later, officers reported hearing gunfire from East University Boulevard. When officers arrived, they said they found a 29-year-old man who said he’d been shot by an unknown person driving an unknown car by his house.

While officers were on that scene, police said two men showed up at a local hospital saying they’d been shot on Testimony Street and a woman and a man arrived at the hospital saying they’d been shot on East University Boulevard.

Officers said they don’t know whether the two shootings were connected.

That same afternoon, officers said they responded to Colbert Circle after reports of shots fired in the area.

Officers said a 19-year-old man was sitting in a car in front of his home and his 29-year-old friend was standing outside the car when a light blue SUV pulled up behind them. The man told officers a man got out of the SUV and started to shoot at the car.

The man and woman ran from the gunfire, and officers said neither of them was injured.

Officers said they don’t know whether that shooting is related to the other two from earlier in the day.
