BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Emergency management, public safety and the Florida Department of Health said Thursday it is important to remain vigilant against COVID-19.
“We’re still very much in the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Don Walker, Brevard County director of communications. “People cannot let their guard down and (should) continue practicing ... CDC recommendations.”

On Thursday, Brevard County officials provided their latest COVID-19 update. Here are the key takeaways.
- The Florida Department of Health in Brevard County said it has one of the highest COVID-19 testing rates in the state.
- Walker said Brevard County’s positivity rate has averaged anywhere between 4% and 12% on a daily basis.
- The Brevard County manager on Thursday signed the community’s 30th local state of emergency in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

- “The number of cases we’ve had over the past two weeks is 990, the medium ages of the cases on any given day has ranged from 35 to 66,” said Maria Stahl, administrator for the Florida Department of Health in Brevard County.
- 87 new cases and four more deaths were added on Thursday, bringing the death toll in the county to 315 cases. There are now 9,657 cases reported in the county.
- There has been a second confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Melbourne High School football team. The team was placed on quarantine earlier this week.
- Brevard County Emergency Management, which has been in continuous operation for 214 days in response beyond the pandemic. The county is urging families to continue following CDC guidelines every day including the upcoming Halloween. “One of the things that is a primary concern that parents need to know is that masks that your child may be wearing for Halloween isn’t going to protect them from COVID-19,” Walker said.
