COVID-19 cases close alternative learning center in Brevard County

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — COVID-19 cases led school officials to shut down an alternative learning center for Brevard County students, marking the first school closure for the district in months.

Students at Brevard County’s North-Central Area Alternative Learning Center will be e-learning through the end of the week.

Brevard Public Schools is hoping the temporary closure will help prevent the spread of the virus. The Merritt Island campus is expected to stay closed until next Monday.

On Monday, the Florida Department of Health recommended the temporary closure based on the number of cases at the alternative learning center. Brevard Public Schools hasn’t had a school closure since mid-October, although the district did see an increase in COVID cases after winter break.

At the facility, a deep-cleaning is underway. However, there are other offices in the complex. The district said all staff not associated with the center reported to work.

The Department of Health did not recommend the entire facility be shut down since illnesses were isolated to the center.
