“It’s been 29 amazing years,” Mullins said. “I’m proud of the work we’ve done. I’m proud of where we are as a district and I’m confident that leadership will continue to do the right thing for kids and take the district to new heights.”
The Brevard County school board accepted Mullins’ voluntary resignation after some passionate public comment.
“The most important thing as a parent is the education we give our kids. and under your leadership, I have trusted Brevard Public Schools to do that job,” one member of the public said.
“I’m not going to go into all the reasons why I’m happy about this change. I think it’s time our district needs a new leader,” another person said.
Mullins’ departure comes after one of the board’s newest members expressed a need for a change in leadership to address issues like school discipline.
On Monday, the board voted to enter into a separation agreement with Mullins, who makes $218,000 per year. He will receive 20 weeks pay in severance in addition to unused sick leave and vacation time.
The school board has another special meeting scheduled for later this week to discuss what it’s looking for in its next superintendent.
