Brevard County middle school teacher accused of sending harmful material to minor

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A Brevard County middle school teacher is on leave after he was accused of sending harmful material to a minor.

Brevard County deputies said Joseph Komjathy, 40, is facing five charges of electronically transmitting harmful material to a minor and one charge of unlawful use of a two-way communication device.

The school district said Komjathy, who taught science at Stone Middle School in Melbourne, was arrested at his home on warrants from Indian River County and was immediately placed on leave.

The district said his termination process is underway.

“While I understand that the allegations and arrest of a teacher can be both disturbing and upsetting, I want you to know that we will communicate with you openly and transparently about everything we are able to share,” the district said in a message to parents. “The safety of our students remains our highest priority.”

Deputies said Komjathy’s bond was set at $300,000.
