Brevard County high school seniors will get in-person graduations, no prom or grad bash

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Brevard Public Schools announced Thursday that each of its high schools will host in-person graduations for the class of 2021, but no prom or grad bash events.

The school district said each of the ceremonies will follow health and safety protocols aligned to CDC guidance on large group gatherings.

“The commencement ceremony recognizes the students’ graduation while honoring and celebrating their entrance into their post-secondary pursuits,” Dr. Stephanie Soliven, assistant superintendent of secondary leading and learning, said in a statement. “We continue our commitment to the importance of the ceremonies for each of our graduates and their families.”

The district said graduation ticket availability will be based on social distancing, class size and venue size.

The district said it determined that typical celebrations including prom and grad bash can’t be held in compliance with CDC guidelines. But each school’s principal will work with their senior class to develop an alternative celebration event that meets health and safety guidelines.

Details of each event along with safety protocols will be released by each school.

“In a year that has been filled with challenges never before encountered, our students and staff have continued to rise to the occasion and do so with grace and flexibility,” said Dr. Mark Mullins, superintendent of Brevard Public Schools. “Their resiliency has been inspirational to all of us. As a district, we will continue to do all we can to celebrate the class of 2021 and provide them a memorable senior experience while keeping the health and safety of our students and staff as our top priority.”
