MELBOURNE, Fla. — A Melbourne man is under arrest after police found drugs and a gun during a traffic stop.
On Sunday, Melbourne police pulled over a black Mercedes on the 800 block of WH Jackson Street.
During the traffic stop a K-9 unit was used while the driver, Travius Roberts, stood by another car that had Roberts’ girlfriend and three children inside.

According to police, based on the open-air sniff, probable cause was obtained to search the Mercedes.
Upon searching the car, police located a loaded gun in the driver’s door.
When officers tried to detain Roberts, he jumped into the passenger seat of the second car and proceeded to sit on and crush one of the children, who is approximately one-year-old.

Police said Roberts resisted commands as the they tried to remove him from the car.
According to police, Roberts scratched officers in the face and used the car door to hit officers.
During the altercation, Roberts’ girlfriend as well as officers told him that he was hurting the child while officers continued to remove him from the car.

Meanwhile, officers removed the girlfriend and other children from the car.
Roberts attempted to put the car in drive while he was still sitting on the child.
Officers were eventually able to remove the child from underneath Roberts and stop him from putting the car in drive.

According to police, an officer deployed his Taser but Roberts removed the probes from his body rendering it ineffective.
Eventually officers were able to subdue Roberts and take him into custody.
Roberts collapsed from exhaustion and he was immediately transported to the hospital.
The one-year-old was also taken to the hospital for a head and chest injury.
Police said a further search of the Mercedes turned up over $6,000 in cash and a significant amount of controlled substances including MDMA, cocaine and methamphetamine.
Roberts is charged with multiple drug possession and trafficking charges as well as aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, child abuse without great bodily harm and resisting with violence.
