BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Special Agent Casey Smith is back on duty after being shot in a prostitution sting as he and fellow agents attempted to arrest the suspect.

“I love doing it. It’s my job. I wanted to do it and that’s what we’ve been working for since day one in the hospital,” Smith said.

Smith was shot a year ago.

He and two other deputies had gone to home on Covina Street to arrest Mary Ellyn Derossett on prostitution charges when, investigators said, her uncle, John Derossett, had opened fire.

Smith was hit multiple times.

Derossett is awaiting trial.

“I don’t have nightmares but I do replay it. I can remember it like it happened yesterday,” Smith said.

His memory of most of the surgeries that followed is foggier.

“Twelve surgeries, all the therapy. Just trying to get back here,” Smith said.

For now, Smith will work light duty in community services.

“We’ll see how the cards fall and what the sheriff ultimately wants me to do. We’ll just figure that out as we go along,” said Smith.

Undercover work is no longer an option for Smith, who received an outpouring of community support after the shooting.

But he has no fears of returning to the road, and still plans to take the sergeant’s exam in October.

“I’m game for whatever. I don’t think I have limitations,” Smith said.
