CAPE CANAVERAL, FLA. — The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office homicide unit is investigating the drowning death of a 69-year-old Oregon man.
Deputies were called to the beach near Jetty Park in Cape Canaveral Wednesday evening for reports of a missing swimmer.

According to the sheriff’s office, the victim was visiting family in the area and had been swimming in the ocean when his relatives lost sight of him.
First responders later found him unresponsive approximately 100 yards offshore. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later declared dead there.

The victim’s body will be taken to the Brevard County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, according to the sheriff’s office.
