BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic is hitting Brevard County.
Last week, Brevard County Clerk of Courts Scott Ellis laid off about a dozen staff members in court positions, and more layoffs could be on the way.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Clerk of Courts office was collecting about $240,000 a week in court fees and fines. Now, that number is between $140,000 to $150,000 per week.

The coronavirus never closed Brevard or Seminole County courts, but the pandemic did delay non-essential court proceedings.
Neither criminal nor jury trials have resumed, and won’t until next month.
