Body of swimmer, 18, who vanished Friday discovered in Melbourne Beach

MELBOURNE BEACH, Fla. — The body of an 18-year-old man who vanished Friday afternoon while swimming at the beach in Indialantic was recovered from the surf Monday morning in Melbourne Beach.

Benjamin Pierre Gilles disappeared from the beach near Wavecrest Avenue at about 1:30 p.m. Friday after appearing to be in distress while in the surf.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and the United States Coast Guard conducted multiple searches for Gilles throughout the weekend without success.

Someone walking on Melbourne Beach near A1A discovered Gilles’ body at about 7:30 a.m. Monday.

Anyone who might have information about Gilles’ death is asked to call Brevard County Agent Adam Walkington at 321-633-8413.
