ORLANDO, Fla. — 2023 is the year when Walt Disney World and Universal will expand their lands of entertainment and open new rides, but some rides have closed in the past decade.
Take a trip down memory lane and see if you remember these old theme park attractions.

Splash Mountain Walt Disney World announced the final day for Splash Mountain before redesign. The new ride's theme will be based on "The Princess and the Frog" and is scheduled to open late 2024. Horizons Located in Epcot, Horizons took guests on a ride through visions of the future. The ride permanently closed on Jan. 9, 1999. (Wikimedia Commons) Body Wars A motion simulator ride at Epcot, Body Wars explored the effects of white blood cells on a splinter in the body. The ride closed in January, 2007. (Wikimedia Commons) Delta Dreamflight Delta Dreamflight was a ride located in the Magic Kingdom which closed on Jan. 5, 1998. It showcased the history of flight. (The Disney Wiki) Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Movie Adventure was a playground at Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World. It closed its door for good on Apr. 2, 2016. (Wikimedia Commons) A high seas Norwegian adventure Maelstrom was a ride in Epcot described as a mix between a log chute and a traditional film attraction. Maelstrom closed Oct. 5, 2014. (Wikimedia Commons) Primeval Whirl Animal Kingdom Primeval Whirl was a spinning roller coaster at Disney's Animal Kingdom that opened in March of 2002 and closed July, 11, 2020. (WFTV Staff) The Great Movie Ride Walt Disney World Resort guests took a ride through the most famous film sets in silver screen history at The Great Movie Ride at Disney's Hollywood Studios. The Great Movie Ride closed in August, 2017. (Scott Miller) Back to the Future ride Having first opened on May 2, 1991, Back to the Future: The Ride was a fan favorite. Eventually, due to declining popularity after a 31-year-run, the ride closed in 2007. (Wikimedia Commons) An original Kongfrontation was one of Universal’s original attractions featured in the park’s grand opening in the 1990’s and quickly became a crowd favorite. It closed in September, 2002. (Wikimedia Commons) Jaws Jaws: The Ride opened in Universal Studios in 1990 at a cost of $45 million. The attraction was replaced by The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in 2012. (Wikimedia Commons) Dragon Challenge Originally named Dueling Dragons in 1999, Dragon Challenge was renovated with The Wizarding World of Harry Potter grand opening on Jun. 18, 2010. The coaster had reached its service life and was demolished for the new attraction, Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. Twister... Ride it Out Twister... Ride It Out was an indoor special effects ride based on the 1996 film. It was placed in the New York themed area of Universal Studios. It opened in 1998 and closed in 2015. (Wikimedia Commons) Disaster! Disaster! A Major Motion Picture Ride... Starring You! was a ride showcasing how special effects were filmed in movies. The ride opened in Jan. 2008 and closed in September of 2015. (Wikimedia Commons) Shrek 4-D Shrek 4-D officially closed on Jan. 10, 2022 at Universal Orlando Resort. Having opened its doors in 2003, the attraction featured a standard 3-D movie experience with 4-D effects. These included moving seats, water sprayers, air machines and special lighting effects. (Universal Orlando Resort/Universal Orlando Resort) Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast Jimmy Neutron’s Nicktoon Blast was a simulator ride based after the events in the Jimmy Neutron film. It opened in 2003 and closed 2011. (Wikimedia Commons) Disney’s newest attraction, TRON Lightcycle Run, will open to the public on April 4.
