BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Confirmed cases of bird flu were reported in wild waterfowl in two Central Florida counties.

The virus, also known as highly pathogenic avian influenza, was found in wild ducks, geese and swans in Volusia and Brevard counties, according to officials. Cases were also found in Sarasota, Charlotte and Palm Beach counties.
Officials said the remainder of the state is under surveillance.

The Florida Department of Agriculture said no cases of this bird flu have been found in domestic, backyard or commercial birds in Florida.
Health officials said the virus is not easily transmissible from birds to humans, but they are concerned that the virus could mutate into another form that could spread readily from person to person, triggering a pandemic.

As of Tuesday morning, no cases of human infections with highly pathogenic avian influenza have been reported in the United States.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the current risk to the public is low.
Officials said you shouldn’t touch sick or dead wild birds.
