Austin Duran death: Consultant review on ‘dysfunctional’ Apopka Fire Department to be released

APOPKA, Fla. — A consultant was hired to review the practices at the Apopka Fire Department after firefighter Austin Duran’s death.

Now, a final draft has been submitted to the city on Wednesday night and will be made public.

A preliminary report called the fire department “dysfunctional.”

The consultant hired by the city looked into the department and said some of the biggest issues at Apopka Fire Department was training and mental health help.

The consultants wrote that when it comes to stressful events the department is only about 10% compliant with state standards.

The report states that the department does have some mental health programs but there was little oversite and protocols surrounding them.

The report also said there was no traffic signal at Station One. That’s expected to be approved Wednesday night at the meeting that starts at 7 p.m.
