From fear to anger, people in Arden Villas are still shaken with emotion Monday as the Marcano family was allowed back into Miya’s apartment to gather her belongings.
The family’s legal team has been gathering their own evidence, talking to those living there and building a case against the apartment complex.
Family attorney Daryl Washington said the security measures were nowhere near adequate when Miya was taken.
“You can see how it would’ve been easy for someone to take Miya out of the back window,” Washington said. “There was no lighting. It was just the perfect place.”
In addition, neighbors have raised red flags that the complex has yet to acknowledge.
Eryn Rutherford said there were multiple times she felt unsafe.
“I personally had an experience where my roommate put in a request and I was home. The person knocked on the door twice and then just walked right in, did something and left,” Rutherford said.
Washington said some have been reaching out about complaints they made about maintenance employees there.
“There was another young lady that said she was in the shower, then when she got out of the shower the maintenance person was right in her apartment without her permission,” Washington said. “This is something that seems like a common theme in this apartment complex.”
Some residents have garnered national attention through a petition demanding action from Arden Villas.
