ASPD responded to a service call Wednesday morning around 10:43 a.m. on the 700 block of Florida Blvd.
The caller was concerned over her husband, as he demonstrated concerning behavior the night before and requested officers escort her inside the residence to pick up Christmas gifts.
Although the family did not believe Scherer was inside, officers discovered he had locked himself in a bedroom, according to a release.

Officers instructed the family member to leave the residence and began communicating with Scherer, attempting to persuade him to come outside.
During the encounter, Scherer broke through a window while holding a handgun and moved toward other family members who were standing outside.
Officers gave loud verbal commands to Scherer, urging him to drop the weapon, while a secondary officer deployed his taser in an effort to use non-lethal means.

Scherer ignored the commands and turned toward his wife while raising the firearm, forcing an officer and a deputy with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office who was assisting, to discharge their weapons.
Officers immediately rendered medical aid to Scherer, who was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Scherer was later arrested facing the charge of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
