Search on for men accused in Dr. Phillips home invasion, shooting

DR. PHILLIPS, Fla. — Detectives are looking for the gunmen who they said shot two people during a home invasion in a Dr. Phillips neighborhood on Friday.

The home invasion was reported shortly before 4 a.m. at a home on Burnway Drive in the Clubhouse Estates subdivision.

Deputies said two men armed with handguns entered the home and demanded money.

A woman in the home said she jumped out of a window when the suspects began shooting.

"The dog was barking loudly, so I was unsettled," said witness Lorena Welch. "It is unsettling because I do have my grandmother living with me and my little one.  Well, they are not little anymore, but there are four children."

When deputies arrived, they said they found that two of the four people in the home had been shot. The victims were transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center in serious condition.

“I’ve never heard of anything happening in this neighborhood in the five years that I’ve been here,” said neighbor Michelle Bass. “I don’t like feeling unsafe.”

Deputies watched over the home hours into the night as crime scene technicians worked the scene.

A Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said the home is rented by two women.

Neighbors said the shooting has put them on edge.

“I was just scared. I didn’t know what to do,” said a neighbor, who did not want to be identified. “I was actually sitting outside and I saw two people run that way.”

The neighbor said she was confused when she heard the gunshots.

“I thought it sounded like someone banging on a shed. But I just don’t know what gunshots sound like,” she said.

The victims’ names have not been released.

They can’t speak to investigators yet because of the severity of their injuries.

"I hope that the family is safe and that the people are well," said Welch.

Robbery Unit detectives believe the victims were targeted by the culprits.
