2 hospitalized after near-drowning in Daytona Beach

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Two young men are clinging to life after nearly drowning at a Volusia County beach on Memorial Day.

Volusia County Beach Safety officials responded to the 100 block of Highway A1A near Earl Street in Daytona Beach just after 8:30 p.m. Monday for reports of two people struggling in the ocean.

Lifeguards arrived on scene and found a 22-year-old man who had already made it to shore. He was taken to the hospital and is currently listed in critical condition.

Rescuers were told the second person had gone under water and couldn’t be found.

Beach Safety officials organized a search and found the 17-year-old boy unconscious in shallow water with no pulse.

Volusia County Emergency Medical personnel performed CPR on the teen at the location before he was taken to the hospital where he also remains in critical condition.

No other details were released.

Volusia County Beach Safety has issued warnings about strong rip currents throughout the Memorial Day weekend.

According to beach safety, they rescued nearly 300 people from the ocean over the holiday weekend. They say rip currents will continue to be particularly dangerous over the next few days.
