ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Descendants of the Black men in Tuskegee, Alabama, who were lied to as part of an infamous study on syphilis, are addressing COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy.
They don’t want that dark moment in history to stop others from getting the shot, saying a lot of the mistrust is rooted in myths, and they want to change that.
A group of men decades ago did not give consent or even know they were part of an unthinkable study conducted by the United States Public Health Service.

They were only told they had “bad blood.”
All these years later, the study still keeps some in the Black community from trusting public health campaigns such as the COVID-19 vaccine.
But these descendants say a lot of the mistrust is based on myths.
