ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Scientists say to reach herd immunity against COVID-19, children need to get the vaccines too.

Pfizer said its vaccine is 100% effective for children as young as 12. Meanwhile, Moderna is continuing to collect efficacy data from their teen trials which is taking place right here in Central Florida.

The lab has given out its second doses of either the Moderna vaccine or a placebo to children as young as 12.

Doctors say its going well, too. Both Pfizer and Moderna gave child participants 12 and up the same doses adults receive.

The mother of a 13-year-old we’ve been following through the trial said her daughter is happy to be helping what hopefully amounts to thousands of children getting back to normal life.

Dr. Salma Elfaki and her team at Lake Nona Pediatric Center have officially finished those second shots for more than 100 children that enrolled at her office.
