DeSantis touts increased funding for Florida’s historically black colleges, universities

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Gov. Ron DeSantis made an appearance in Daytona Beach on Wednesday to discuss an increase in funding for historically black colleges and universities in the state.

Bethune Cookman University, where DeSantis spoke, got the largest share when the governor signed the budget, an extra $13 million.

University presidents called the bump in funding unprecedented here in the state of Florida.

During the news conference, DeSantis also addressed the spread of COVID-19 leading into the July 4 holiday weekend.

DeSantis said he thinks the local municipalities in Central Florida are doing a good job controlling the crowds on the beaches. He said he believes as long as people aren’t right on top of each other, it’s better if people are celebrating outside.

“I’m more concerned about people crowding into the AC and having private parties,” he said.
