SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — While the amount of COVID-19 cases continue to surge around Florida, parents in Orange County and Seminole County faced a deadline Friday to decide how their children will attend school.
In addition to the in-class face-to-face option, parents in Seminole County chose between Seminole Connect, Seminole County Virtual Schools or a hybrid half-day option.
Seminole County parents had until 12 p.m. Friday to make their decision.
Back to school: Where can I register my student?
According to Seminole County Public Schools Communications Officer Michael Lawrence, the selections were the following:
- No selection made: 18,536 (27.47%)
- Seminole Connect: 17,441 (25.84%)
- Face-to-Face: 15,797 (23.41%)
- Save My Seat! Virtual Classes: 8,687 (12.87%)
- Hybrid: 6,417 (9.51%)
- Transfer to Seminole County Virtual School: 609 (0.9%)
Teachers in the county will also have a choice of their own when it comes to the upcoming school year. They’ll have the option of going back to the classroom and teach students in person or they can choose to teach Seminole Connect by requesting a workplace accommodation, an option that wasn’t available before.
Parents in Orange County will also have to make a decision for their students by 5 p.m. Friday.
They can choose one of three back-to-school options: Face-to-face, LaunchED at home, or virtual school.
So far, less than half of the county’s students have made a choice.
Orange County’s superintendent, Dr. Barbara Jenkins, said many parents are worried about the possibility of an outbreak in a classroom.
