Human Rights Campaign refuses Disney’s $5 million donation, pushes for ‘meaningful action’

The Human Rights Campaign said it is refusing a $5 million donation from Disney related to Disney’s opposition to the controversial Parental Rights in Education bill.

On Wednesday, Disney CEO Bob Chapek said the donation would be made to support LGBTQ rights protections.

But the HRC said it won’t accept the money until “meaningful action is taken to combat” the bill, which critics have deemed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

“The Human Rights Campaign will not accept this money from Disney until we see them build on their public commitment and work with LGBTQ+ advocates to ensure that dangerous proposals, like Florida’s Don’t Say Gay or Trans bill, don’t become dangerous laws, and if they do, to work to get them off the books,” said Joni Madison, interim president of Human Rights Campaign, in a statement.

The bill bans discussion of gender identity and sexuality in some young classrooms.

Chapek said he plans to meet with Gov. Ron DeSantis to discuss his concerns about the bill soon.
