BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — When SPCA of Brevard Adoption Center staff members arrived to work Wednesday morning, they found a small scruffy black-and-white dog tied up to the bench outside their front door.
Attached to the pup was a note that read in part, “I’m hoping someone will take good care of me. See my parents couldn’t afford me anymore and didn’t know what else to do.”

The note went on to say that the 3-year-old dog’s name is Blaze, that he’s up-to-date on shots, has fleas and needs a haircut.
Shelter officials posted a note of their own on social media Wednesday addressed to Blaze’s family. They’re hoping to locate them so they can reunite the pup with his family and help them get through their hard times.

“We know that leaving him had to be incredibly difficult for you,” officials wrote. “What you may not know, is that thanks to the generosity of some grant funders and donors in our community, we might be able to help you keep Blaze.”
The shelter has a Community Pet Project that uses grants and donations to help pet owners who are struggling to provide for their animals.
“Even if we don’t have the ability to provide the exact service your pet needs, we may be able to share resources with you that can find someone who can,” the shelter said.

The fund provides pet food to owners in need, and also is able to help with medical issues with owned pets that may otherwise result in the family surrendering their loved pet.
“We hope that people will realize there are options out there and much safer ways to relinquish a pet than tying them up somewhere over night,” shelter officials said. “We understand that it’s not easy and that families sometimes feel they have no other options. Please talk to us, or one of the other amazing shelters and rescues in our community, before leaving your pet in a potentially dangerous situation.”
