Tropical Storm Irma forms in Atlantic Ocean

MIAMI — Tropical Storm Irma formed Wednesday morning in the far eastern Atlantic Ocean but poses no immediate threat to land, the National Hurricane Center said.

At about 11 a.m. Wednesday, the storm was about 420 miles west of the Cape Verde, an archipelago off the coast of Senegal, meteorologist Rusty McCranie said.

Maximum sustained winds were 50 mph with higher gusts, the NHC said.

The present movement is west at 13 mph. The general movement is expected to continue for the next several days.
