What a relief: Pilot program brings public restroom facilities to downtown Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. — When you got to go, you got to go, and now, residents and visitors of Orlando can breathe a sigh of relief when walking around downtown.

New restroom facilities were installed Sunday on Central Boulevard and Rosalind Avenue as part of a one-year pilot program to help people in search of public restrooms.

“The DTO Go program is the first step in the city's efforts to identify long-term solutions for public restroom availability in downtown Orlando. The new program will provide a safe restroom environment with facilities that have minimal impact on the community and meet the needs of a variety of users,” city officials said in a news release.

Crews installed two DTO Go locations in downtown Orlando at the corner of Central Boulevard and Rosalind Avenue and at the Jefferson Garage near Gertrude’s Walk Rideshare Hub, with two additional locations planned for 2020.

“Yeah, it’s a great idea. You don’t want to get picked up for public urination or anything like that, so, it’s great that you can have a spot where you can do it legally,” Orlando resident Jack Ferrell said.

The bathrooms will be staffed with attendants, who will keep the bathrooms clean and keep people moving.

Users have a maximum time of 10 minutes.

The city’s goal is to gather data to decide where more restrooms are needed and later build something permanent.

The restrooms will be available for public use starting Monday at 11 a.m.
