The blaze erupted around 2 a.m. Thursday at A&L Farms in Upper Bern Township, Pennsylvania, WFMZ reported.

Flames could be seen a mile away. Fire crews tried to use a nearby pond to supply water to help fight the fire, but the cold weather made the pond too slushy to be of use, so they needed the help of tanker trucks to ferry water to the site.

After two hours of fighting the blaze, two buildings were a total loss and the farm’s egg house was damaged, fire officials told WFMZ.

The farm has been the site of several fires in the past.

In 2019 the owners lost 37,000 chickens in a hen house to flames, and a fire in 2015 caused $1.7 million in damages, the Reading Eagle reported.
