A teenage car burglary suspect is in the hospital after being shot by deputy on State Road 429 early Saturday morning, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office said.
According to deputies, the incident started around 3:30 a.m. after deputies responded to S.R. 429 near Sinclair Road to assist the Lakeland Police Department with a report of a stolen vehicle.
Osceola deputies set up spike strips in an effort to stop the suspect vehicle. The driver went around them, causing the vehicle to spin out in the median.
OSCEOLA, Fla. — A deputy approached the vehicle and the suspect allegedly drove at him, deputies said. . The deputy fired at the suspect, who was injured during the incident.
The suspect was transported to the hospital. His condition is unknown.
""My deputies approached the suspect vehicle in an attempt to apprehend the suspect, as one of the deputies started to exit his vehicle and approach the suspect, the suspect drove directly into his path, this action placed my deputy in fear for his life," said Osceola County Sheriff Russell Gibson.
No deputies or other persons were injured during the incident.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is leading the investigation.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, both northbound and southbound lanes of S.R. 429 near Sinclair Road were shut down just before 6:30 a.m.
