Wife of Tavares mayor arrested on perjury charge for statement that sent husband to jail

TAVARES, Fla. — The wife of the Tavares mayor was arrested on a perjury charge Monday for a lie investigators said sent her husband to jail.

A report said Sharon Wolfe blamed her changing story on the death of a pet.

Sharon Wolfe recanted her story a week after she gave a sworn written statement to prosecutors, saying that her husband fired a gun at her during a fight.

Mayor Robert Wolfe was arrested for the alleged incident involving the shot fired.

The fight happened on April 24.

Court documents said Sharon Wolfe didn’t go to deputies for help until May 4.

She reported her husband was drunk, that they fought, and he angrily walked toward the bedroom where he said he would shoot his gun.

A shot was fired through the wall of the home.

Two days later, deputies arrested the mayor.

Investigators said his wife then backed off her initial accusations.

In a sworn statement last week, affidavits said she told an investigator that the gunshot was an accident.

She and her husband hadn’t been fighting, or drunk, or violent, she said, despite what she originally reported.

It’s not known yet if the firing into or within an occupied dwelling charge against Robert Wolfe will be dropped.
