Trulieve: Medical marijuana dispensary opens in Edgewater

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A medical cannabis dispensary opened Thursday morning in Edgewater.

The dispensary, which is on Boston Road, is the first of its kind in the county.

The dispensary's first customer, who said he has epilepsy, told Channel 9 that he previously had to travel from his Holly Hill home to Tampa to have his prescription filled.

The dispensary sells products with both THC and CBD, but only to customers who have a valid prescription.

“Our goal is to help as many patients as we can, so we’re thrilled we can now better serve our patients in Edgewater and Volusia County,” Trulieve CEO Kim Rivers said.

Shaun Perdue has seizures and said the medical marijuana has helped stop them.

Trulieve delivers statewide and has five other dispensaries in Clearwater, Miami, Pensacola, Tallahassee and Tampa. The company plans to open a sixth dispensary in Jacksonville soon.

In July, Trulieve opened Florida's first legal medical marijuana dispensary in Tallahassee. That dispensary received state approval to begin selling a type of medical marijuana that purportedly does not get users high, but is believed to alleviate conditions such as severe seizures.

Last November, voters approved the legalization of medical marijuana but the Legislature is still debating its legislation.

The company said the dispensary serves a few hundred customers, but it expects that number to grow in the coming months. To learn more about Trulieve, visit its website.
