NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — A shark bit a teen surfing on New Smyrna Beach Saturday afternoon, Volusia County Beach Safety officials said.
The 17-year-old was surfing near the jetty in front of the Minorca Condos around noon when a shark bit his right hand, lifeguards said.
John Brown witnessed the teen emerge from the water while spending the day at the beach.
"I turned my glasses and here comes this kid running out with his hand just gushing blood," he said.
Clayton Talley was also at the beach and saw the shark attack.
"These sharks came out of nowhere and started mauling up a bunch of fish," he said.
The teen’s injuries were minor, lifeguards said, but his parents drove him to a nearby hospital to have the bite checked out.
The teen was in waist-deep water with his surfboard when he was bitten, lifeguards said.
